When the three-year-old West Ward Market lost its main produce vendor early in the season, LaFarm had the privilege to help fill this urgent need. In partnership with Easton Garden Works, we distributed over 1,500 lbs. of food directly to our West Ward neighbors at a pay-what-you-can rate, with another 3,500 lbs going to local pantries. This work would not have been possible without our Capital Blue Cross fellows, who worked to harvest this fresh nutritious food and staff the weekly farm stand from May to October.
This story highlights the importance of small farms like LaFarm that have the generous support of local institutions. When food systems are based solely on farmers’ and vendors’ need to make a profit, situations like this can lead to communities being deprived of access to healthy fresh food. But because of LaFarm’s position, we are able to pivot mid-season and put our community first.
